Scratch-scratch. Before you negotiate with the corner of the sofa, take a look at what your cat is choosing.

Cats Protection explains that scratching is a normal behavior and that cats need appropriate outlets. The useful home-design question is not just which scratcher looks nicest. It is which surface, direction, and location your cat actually uses.

Notice whether the scratching happens upright or along the floor. Look at where it happens, too. Those observations can help you compare a stable vertical post with a horizontal pad, rather than buying another version of the wrong thing.

Put an appropriate option where your cat can find it and has room to stretch. Check that it stays steady. Invite interest without grabbing their paws or forcing a demonstration.

The official Cats Protection video linked below walks through the behavior and suitable alternatives. If scratching or other behavior changes suddenly, contact your vet so a physical cause is not missed.

For a useful community reply, share the surface your cat chose, where you put it, and what did not work. The imperfect attempts help other pet parents, too.
